Vancouver Signs I What are illuminated Channel Letters?

illuminated channel lettersIlluminated channel letters are a common form of lighted exterior signage. Standard channel letter. A standard channel letter is 3-dimensional sign that often takes the shape of letters (hence the name). It is typically manufactured from aluminum because of its light weight and resistance to rust.

The illuminated channel letter starts as flat sheet of aluminum which is cut to the required shape forming the back of the letter. . The sides are called the "returns" and are  then formed by bending a sheet of aluminum around the back.  Typical thicknesses are 3 - 6 inches in depth.

The newly created sides are welded to the back to create a solid sign. LEDs are then placed inside the letter to provide the source of light. The sides are painted to whatever colour the client wants and is finished by fitting an acrylic or lexan face on the front.  A trim cap is then applied to finish the appearance and weatherproof the sign.

In a previous post, I discussed the various types of channel letters available.

Neon was commonly used as the light source until the advent of LEDs and is still used for certain applications such as backlit channel letters.
